Instructions
- 1CB passes directly to LW on the wing while LB moves to set a screen at the 9m line
- 2LW holds the ball briefly, selling the wing threat to pull defenders wide
- 3CB cuts off the screen set by LB, accelerating toward the goal
- 4LW returns the pass to LB, who has positioned between CB and the nearest defender
- 5LB delivers a leading pass to the cutting CB arriving at shooting range
- 6CB finishes with a jump shot from the gap created by the cross-screen action
Coaching Points
- LB sets the screen before CB arrives — the cutter should never have to wait for the screen
- CB reads D-CB's position and cuts to whichever side of the screen gives the cleaner angle
- LW must look off the defense by holding the ball a beat before the return pass to LB
- The pass to cutting CB leads ahead of them — do not throw to where they are, throw ahead
- If the defense switches, LB immediately rolls to the open space that D-CB vacated
Common Mistakes
- LB sets the screen too late, forcing CB to slow down and wait, which kills momentum
- CB always cuts to the same side of the screen instead of reading D-CB's positioning
- LW rushes the return pass to LB instead of holding a beat to sell the fake
- Pass to cutting CB is thrown behind them instead of leading them into the shooting lane
- LB does not roll after the screen, standing stationary and clogging the space
