3-2-1 Defense Formation Drill

Teams practice the 3-2-1 defensive pyramid with three front defenders pressuring the ball, two mid-fielders supporting and filling gaps, and one sweeper covering the deep zone. The formation shifts as the ball moves across the court.

Instructions

  1. 1A1 drives from the left wing; D1 pressures and D4 supports behind.
  2. 2Ball moves from A1 to A2 in the center via a cross-court pass.
  3. 3A2 advances centrally; D2 steps up to pressure the ball carrier.
  4. 4Ball swings to A3 on the right wing; D3 and D5 shift to cover.
  5. 5A3 takes a jump shot from the right side under D3 and D5 pressure.
  6. 6D6 sweeper holds the deep zone as last line throughout the drill.

Coaching Points

  • Call out 'ball side' or 'weak side' continuously so the whole formation knows where to shift
  • Front three: pressure the ball carrier but never all three chase — one presses, two contain
  • Mid-fielders: when a front defender commits to a trap, you fill the vacated lane immediately
  • Sweeper: never move forward until the mid-fielders have dropped to cover; you are the last line
  • Formation shifts must be simultaneous — one late mover creates a gap the whole unit suffers for

Common Mistakes

  • All three front defenders chasing the ball carrier, leaving gaps in the formation
  • Mid-fielders being slow to fill when the front defender commits to the trap
  • Sweeper pushing forward too early, leaving the deep zone completely exposed
  • No verbal communication during shifts, causing confusion about assignments
  • Maintaining rigid positions instead of shifting as a connected unit
