Instructions
- 1DEF sprints from deep position to close the gap on ATT.
- 2ATT drives toward the wing to exploit DEF's distance.
- 3DEF continues closing and brakes into a low defensive stance.
- 4ATT pushes further along the wing looking for the shot angle.
- 5DEF closes the final gap with hands high to contest the shot.
- 6ATT takes a jump shot under pressure; DEF contests without fouling.
Coaching Points
- Sprint the first three steps at maximum intensity — a slow close-out gives the attacker a free shot
- Brake into a defensive stance with a short choppy step just before contact range
- Keep hands up and forward on the close-out to contest without fouling
- Don't go for the steal; contest the shot angle, not the ball
- After each rep, return immediately to your start position to simulate game recovery
Common Mistakes
- Jogging the close-out instead of sprinting, giving the attacker time to set up a clean shot
- Running past the attacker without braking into a defensive stance
- Reaching for the ball on the close-out and fouling the shooter
- Not recovering back to starting position after each rep, losing game-like intensity
