Instructions

  1. 1DEF sprints from deep position to close the gap on ATT.
  2. 2ATT drives toward the wing to exploit DEF's distance.
  3. 3DEF continues closing and brakes into a low defensive stance.
  4. 4ATT pushes further along the wing looking for the shot angle.
  5. 5DEF closes the final gap with hands high to contest the shot.
  6. 6ATT takes a jump shot under pressure; DEF contests without fouling.

Coaching Points

  • Sprint the first three steps at maximum intensity — a slow close-out gives the attacker a free shot
  • Brake into a defensive stance with a short choppy step just before contact range
  • Keep hands up and forward on the close-out to contest without fouling
  • Don't go for the steal; contest the shot angle, not the ball
  • After each rep, return immediately to your start position to simulate game recovery

Common Mistakes

  • Jogging the close-out instead of sprinting, giving the attacker time to set up a clean shot
  • Running past the attacker without braking into a defensive stance
  • Reaching for the ball on the close-out and fouling the shooter
  • Not recovering back to starting position after each rep, losing game-like intensity
