Instructions

  1. 1A1 drives at D1 centrally; D1 holds position as primary defender.
  2. 2A1 beats D1 on penetration; D2 slides in from the side to help.
  3. 3D4 shifts toward the center to cover D2's vacated assignment.
  4. 4A1 passes out to A2 on the wing; D2 recovers to track A2 immediately.
  5. 5A1 relocates low; D3 and D5 adjust to cover the new threat.
  6. 6A1 shoots from a contested position; D6 holds deep as the last line.

Coaching Points

  • Shout 'help' the moment you sense your primary is beaten — don't wait for confirmation
  • Help defender: sprint on a diagonal line to cut off the attacker's path, not to where they are
  • Recover to your original assignment the instant the ball leaves the attacker's hand
  • Primary defender: don't collapse after being beaten — recover to help elsewhere immediately
  • Deep defender: trust the helpers and hold your depth — moving up creates a bigger gap behind

Common Mistakes

  • Help defender reacting too slowly, arriving after the attacker has already scored
  • Failing to recover to original assignment after helping, leaving that attacker open
  • Deep defender moving up to help when the situation is already covered above
  • Primary defender giving up after being beaten instead of recovering into the help chain
  • No verbal communication about who is helping and who is recovering
