Instructions
- 1A1 and A2 advance simultaneously; all three defenders sprint back goal-side.
- 2D1 recovers to pick up A1 as the closest threat on the ball.
- 3D2 tracks back to cover A2 cutting on the opposite side.
- 4Ball moves from A1 to A2 via a quick pass to exploit the recovery.
- 5D3 and D2 converge on A2 to contest the drive.
- 6A2 takes a jump shot under pressure; defenders call assignments throughout.
Coaching Points
- Sprint back goal-side first — get between attackers and goal before worrying about assignments
- Closest recovering defender takes the ball carrier; second defender takes the most dangerous cutter
- Backpedal with your eyes on the ball, not on the player you are tracking
- Call out coverage assignments loudly on the sprint back — silence during transition creates gaps
- Don't panic — a disciplined 3v2 recovery concedes less than disorganised gambling
Common Mistakes
- Defenders sprinting toward an attacker instead of getting goal-side first
- No communication during recovery, causing two defenders to cover the same attacker
- Turning their back to the ball while sprinting, losing awareness of the attack pattern
- Gambling for a steal on the recovery sprint instead of setting up disciplined coverage
- Jogging back instead of sprinting at full intensity, arriving too late to contest
