Instructions

  1. 1A1 drives from the left wing; D1 tracks in man-to-man coverage.
  2. 2Ball moves from A1 to A2 at center; D2 picks up the new ball carrier.
  3. 3A1 crosses down toward A3's position to force a switch situation.
  4. 4D1 calls 'switch' and picks up A3; D3 adjusts to the new assignment.
  5. 5Ball swings from A2 to A3 on the right; D3 and D2 close the gap.
  6. 6A3 takes a jump shot; D4 provides back support to the switching defenders.

Coaching Points

  • Call out 'switch' early — at the moment of the cross, not after the attacker has cleared
  • The switching defender must verbally confirm 'I got him' before the releasing defender lets go
  • Meet the new attacker at the crossing point, not on the far side — close the gap instantly
  • Back support defenders: shift to cover the releasing defender's original assignment immediately
  • After the switch, re-establish standard spacing as quickly as possible to prevent exploitation

Common Mistakes

  • Calling the switch too late, after the attacker has already cleared the crossing point
  • Both defenders following the same attacker, leaving the second attacker completely open
  • Not verbally confirming the switch, causing confusion about who has which assignment
  • Switching defender standing still at the cross instead of meeting the new attacker
  • Failing to re-establish spacing after the switch, leaving gaps for the attack to exploit
