Instructions

  1. 1P1 passes from the upper position across to P2 on the right side
  2. 2P3 cuts sharply behind the defense on a long diagonal run toward goal
  3. 3P2 delivers the ball to P3 arriving near the central scoring area
  4. 4P3 finishes with a jump shot on goal from close range

Coaching Points

  • Wait for the defense to overplay before cutting — read before committing
  • The backdoor cut must be hard and straight — a curved run is easy to recover against
  • Passer must deliver the ball low and ahead so the cutter catches without slowing
  • Cutter should already be deciding shot type before receiving — short angle or flying shot
  • If the cut arrives late, adjust to a pivot position and look for the next action

Common Mistakes

  • The cutter starts the backdoor run before the defender is actually overplaying
  • The passer does not sell the misdirection, so the defender stays in position
  • The pass into the backdoor lane is too high or too far ahead of the cutter
  • The cutter receives the ball but turns away from the goal instead of toward it
  • The backdoor becomes predictable because it is used every possession
