Teaches players to catch in stride and attack the next action immediately. That first controlled touch is crucial for fast-break pace and second-wave continuity.

Instructions

  1. 1P2 cuts diagonally toward P1's position, calling for the ball while at full sprint
  2. 2P1 delivers a leading pass to P2, who catches in stride without breaking pace
  3. 3P2 carries forward and passes to P3 cutting from the opposite side
  4. 4P3 receives while accelerating, immediately transitioning into the next action
  5. 5P3 drives toward the goal area and finishes with a jump shot in stride

Coaching Points

  • Cut at full sprint — a half-speed cut is easy for a defender to track and deny
  • Hands extend toward the passer while the feet keep moving; do not slow to catch
  • The passer leads to where the receiver is going, not where they are — communicate the cut direction
  • After the catch, eyes immediately go upfield — the next decision must happen before you land
  • Vary the cut angle each repetition: diagonal, back cut, and lateral all need equal training

Common Mistakes

  • Slowing down or stopping to catch the ball instead of receiving at full stride
  • Passer throws to where the receiver is standing instead of leading them into space
  • Receiver drops hands after the catch instead of immediately transitioning to the next action
  • Always cutting in the same direction instead of varying the angle each repetition
  • Not communicating the cut direction to the passer, resulting in poorly timed passes
