Hip Shot - Close Range Power

Players develop the hip shot technique, releasing the ball from hip height with full shoulder and hip rotation to generate power in tight spaces where no overhead draw is possible. Trains core engagement and low-trajectory finishing.

Instructions

  1. 1CB advances from center and passes to PV near the 6m line
  2. 2PV receives, adjusts position, and returns the ball to LB
  3. 3LB cuts forward and receives the pass moving toward goal
  4. 4LB drives into tight space where D1 blocks overhead options
  5. 5LB fires a hip shot with full body rotation, releasing from hip height

Coaching Points

  • Drive the hip through first — power comes from rotation, not the arm
  • Plant your feet wide before shooting to create a stable base for the rotation
  • Keep the ball at hip height through the wind-up; raising it defeats the purpose
  • Aim low corner — the rising trajectory will carry it past the GK's late reaction
  • Use this when defender's arms are up, not as a last resort

Common Mistakes

  • Raising the ball above hip height during the wind-up, negating the hip shot advantage
  • Generating power from the arm alone instead of using hip and shoulder rotation
  • Narrow foot placement, causing instability during the rotational motion
  • Aiming too high — the rising trajectory already lifts the ball, so aim low
  • Using the hip shot when there is space for an overhead throw, reducing shot quality
